don’t forget your coat: making statements with outerwear

long before i settled into my fashion sense, i was the culprit of the ‘basic black coat’. it matched everything, it was practical… but the older i get, the more i absolutely loathe covering up a killer, well-planned look with a practical, boring, black coat: so this season i’ve stocked up on a few new jackets, the first of which i’m debuting in this post. out with the old… in with the pearls!

at only $80, this h&m denim jacket has a detachable faux-fur collar and embroidered pearl decals. it’s got nice weight to it (weight = warmth!) and it’s super interesting without feeling like you’re leaving the house in grandma’s floor length vintage mink. i get it… we all want something we can throw on every day without thinking about it, but the reality is this: outerwear is just as much a part of your #lotd as your shoes. especially for us city gals, since a majority of our day is spent walking to-and-from.

with this look, i wore a metallic gold t-shirt, some dark wash skinnies, and my latest obsession: earthie’s ‘braga’ patent leather loafers in burgundy. if you read my recent post on practical maxi’s for fall, you got the lowdown on these #sponsored shoes, but i’ll give it to you one more time for the record: i have plantar fasciitis so i search high and low for footwear that provides maximum comfort. these really do the trick. earth brands’ earthies collection feature an innovative, cushioned, uniquely-molded footbed. the cupped heel sets the foot into the proper position, an anatomic arch increases touch points along the transition from the heel to the forefoot and a cradled toe area evenly distributes weight away from toes. it is the ultimate in arch placement, and you feel it with every single step you take!

in this post, you’re seeing a much more casual side to these shoes. i love styling shoes twice, and this is another great way to wear them! thank you, earthies!

here’s to hoping this look has inspired a few of my readers to get ‘a little extra’ when choosing their fall/winter outerwear this year. it’s tempting to go with the easiest pick, but rewarding to feel like you’re the coolest person on the block in a sea of “practical black coats.” — tag me in all your fall/winter outerwear pics, and don’t forget to follow @indigoheightsblog on instagram for more inspo!
