pics unplanned: how ignoring routine led to quality content, more downtime & tons of fun!

the hubby and i recently spent a sunday with friends at long beach. we took an 8:42am train out there in an effort to make the most of our day – meaning we had to leave our apartment by 7:30. that’s code for “minimal hair, makeup & outfit effort”. so i thought, contrary to most of my other swimwear posts, that i would put together an entry showcasing the most basic and easy beach look that you can throw together in five minutes or less.

i’m that girl that does my hair & makeup to go to the beach. typically, i’m matching my suit to an exotic kaftan with precision… accessorizing with straw, hemp, palm and any other summertime texture that’s available to me – and that’s a-okay, because i find great joy in putting together a picture-perfect look. it’s not a chore for me, and i feel super confident when i’m rocking it. however, after a very longwinded and exhausting saturday, the last thing i wanted to do was strategize an epic look. so i went easy on myself, rolled out of bed, threw my hair in a high pony, and dug a bikini out of my bottom drawer. and guess what? i lived to talk about it.

i bought the same pair of sweatshorts from h&m in three different colors. they are incredibly comfortable, forgiving and look great paired with a bikini top (or sports bra!). on me, because i’m a shortie, they are almost high-waisted and they provide a nice amount of tummy coverage for those mid-day snow cone runs up to the boardwalk. my bikini is a mix-n-match, with the top by pilyq, and the bottoms from target’s shade & shore line…. but you’d never know it! unpictured is my ‘resting beach face’ tank which is always a hit whenever i wear it (especially at the beach!).

i put so much time, energy and effort into most of my looks, that it was such a breath of fresh air to rock a photo-ready outfit that took little to no effort at all. it was a reality check for me. not every single ‘blog look’ has to be obsessed over. not every beach day needs to be planned out down to the matching lipstick. sometimes, relaxing & having fun in great company is simply more important than what goes on instagram. what are your quirks and idiosyncrasies? we all have them. comment below with one silly habit you have and how you can break the mold (at least once) to give yourself a rest! you’ll be happy you did.
